More and more people use mobile gadgets to access online content, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is ever growing. To meet this demand, the establishment that supervises the universal top-level extensions, ICANN, introduced the dot MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the intention behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with certain restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites should be developed to be viewed without problems by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” established by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the .MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The regulations have provoked some questions taking into account that the universal top-level domain is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to access a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be designed in such a way as to be accessed by most web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
